A walk in a nature reserve

Mindful photography for me means finding an endless amount of subjects to photograph in a very restricted area.

It wasn’t really a walk, though

When I needed some distraction from daily life a few days ago I decided to follow a photographer friends’ recommendation and visited a local nature trail. She had mentioned bright blue-winged dragonflies to be seen there and I didn’t need another reason, so I went to see if I could find them and wasn’t disappointed.

And despite being on a nature trail – supposed to be used to be hiked – I ended up staying in a space of about 20sqm and spend the next 3 hours exploring.

I have never been one to photographically cope with grand vistas and always struggled to create pleasing photographs in vast landscapes. Give me details, though, and I will find something. And today I found lots.

It only takes small spaces

The following photographs were all taken within that area of about 20sqm. And the longer I stayed there, the more subjects jumped at me.

Plants and their intricate details
Insects of all kinds of shapes, colours, and sizes

Amongst them my favourites and the original reason I chose this spot: dragonflies.

Time for experiments

I had also taken some new gadgets that I hadn’t used very often, if at all. So I also spent some time experimenting with the glass ball, my new filters, some ICM, and whatever I could make out of the interesting reflections everywhere. Can you see the face in one of them?

At the end of the day

Days like these to me are not about creating portfolio-worthy images and photographs that win awards. They are purely about being in nature and experiencing all its beauty, and trying to show some of it in my photographs.
