The males have got the blues
Every year for about 2 weeks around the end of March there is a great spectacle of nature in one of the moors not far from where I live. The males of a particular type of moor frogs turn blue during mating season to attract females.
So, having missed it most of the time over the years for one reason or another, I managed to get there this year. And it was worth every minute – or rather hour – I spent.
Lucky me
As this only goes on for about 2 weeks every year and also depends on the weather, things can get quite busy in this particular place. Fortunately, I was able to go during the week which meant that not too many other people were around. Also, most of the ones that were didn’t have the patience to wait longer than a few minutes, take a quick photograph with their phone and off they went.
Gear
I don’t like to talk about gear, but I’ll do it here anyway. I am well aware that mine is not really suitable for this kind of photography when looking for great detailed photographs of the frogs. However, as far as mindful photography is concerned, which is more my cuppa tea, it is very relaxing and almost meditative to watch these creatures in their habitat trying to find mates. I don’t care, that the photos cannot show a lot of details because I just didn’t get close enough or didn’t have a long enough lens. What I do care about is that I had a great time just sitting there and watching them.
The pond was full of them and there was never a dull moment. So, live permitting, I’ll most probably be back next year.
